Illustrated books with simple stories and symbols

Illustrated books with simple stories and animations designed to make it easier for children to understand.

Who are these for?

These books are aimed at any children who have been unable to make progress in reading in the conventional way. This includes children with Additional Support Needs, children for whom English is a second language and children who have encountered problems with decoding and understanding text.

This reading system uses the pictures (by Alex Brychta) and stories (by Roderick Hunt) under agreement with Oxford University Press and symbols from Widgit Software. It has been designed to encourage children to engage with text and to promote understanding.

What is this symbolised reading scheme?

The books have picture symbols above the text. Children should be introduced to the characters in the stories along with the symbolised word and plain text. This gives children every opportunity for success but does not limit their reading to symbolised text if they are able to read plain text.
